Club Penguin Discussion 9/15: Would You Like To See More Rooms Decorated During Parties?

Club Penguin Rooms

Hey Everyone,

This week’s Club Penguin Discussion is all about Rooms. Club Penguin is made up of rooms. There are 48 rooms scattered around the island. While all of these rooms aren’t as popular as others, you will still see some penguins in them on crowded servers. I wrote an in-depth discussion about Club Penguin’s Parties back in June. You can view that by clicking here. Club Penguin has always decorated some of their party rooms.

Let’s go back in time to the Music Jam 2009. Back then, Club Penguin only had 32 rooms. Out of those, 22 rooms were decorated. 75% of all the rooms on Club Penguin had some sort of decoration. That’s pretty incredible considering what today’s standards for parties are. Even the hidden rooms like the Cave had some sort of decoration.

Cave3.3

Pretty much every party in 2009 had a TON of decorations. April Fools 2009, was amazing in terms of decorations. Out of the 32 rooms Club Penguin had at that time,

24 rooms were decorated.

One of my all time favorite rooms was at this party. The Box Store. When was the last time you saw this room?

Box Store

As you can tell, something changed. Club Penguin threw some amazing and most memorable parties in 2012, like Operation Blackout. That party right there in my opinion, was the best party Club Penguin has ever thrown. A ton of rooms were decorated and contributed to the story very well. One of my favorite rooms during the party was Herbert’s Paradise room. I mean, just look at the DETAILS! Its AMAZING!

Blackoutparadise

Operation Blackout also had this feature where the rooms would get darker, colder, and more snow would fall as time gone by.

Operation Blackout DARK Rooms

LOOK AT THOSE ROOMS. They blend in with the story so well, and are just breathtaking. When was the last time you saw parties that had this room changing feature? I can’t think of any since this party…

Now let’s go to modern day parties. In my opinion, this was Club Penguin’s worst year of parties. Last year’s parties weren’t that good either. But really, this year’s parties were such a letdown. Let’s talk about this year’s Music Jam. I wouldn’t even call it a “Music Jam”. Remember how I was talking about 2009’s Music Jam, and how it had 22 rooms decorated? Well, this year’s Music Jam had a “whopping” 7 rooms decorated. 7 rooms out of the 48 rooms Club Penguin currently has. That is horrible.

The picture below shows off some rooms that are HARDLY ever touched anymore. The Iceberg is a very popular room on Club Penguin, and hasn’t been properly decorated since last year’s Holiday Party. I wouldn’t even really count that either, because they reused the room decoration… 😛

When will we see these rooms be properly decorated again? Back in 2009, most of these rooms WERE decorated. What happened?

CP Rooms Not Dectorated

Club Penguin threw a Penguin Cup party in June. This party in my opinion wasn’t good. It lacked content, story, fun, and DECORATIONS. Only 8 rooms were decorated and those were the “popular” rooms. Even the Town was poorly decorated. All they did was put out flags and changed the pavement. I could of seen Club Penguin doing something with the teams. They could of decorated each building to match a team. The Coffee Shop could be painted green and maybe even glow? They could of also put a Space Squid on the building. The same goes for the rest of the buildings. And since there were 4 teams, they could of put some signs on trees showing off the team that wouldn’t be on a building. I just feel like they cheaped out when decorating Club Penguin’s most popular room…

TownPenguinCup

Okay so let’s face it. Something changed. Party decorations are nowhere close to how they used to be. Out of the 48 rooms on Club Penguin, only around 10 are decorated. Sometimes even less as seen with the Music Jam, and the Penguin Cup. What happened Club Penguin? I would think you would change something even if it weren’t the decorations. Content? Story? Nope. There has been no positive change in parties since Operation Blackout. I think everyone agrees with me that Club Penguin’s parties aren’t anywhere close to where they used to be and are ultimately one word. Disappointment.

Club Penguin HAS to change the way they make their parties. They are capable of doing so. Why are only 10 rooms decorated when there used to be 20+ rooms only a few years ago? Why has the content fallen so dramatically? I mean, even a younger kid who has been playing since 2011 could see a huge drop in everything.

I would like to see MORE rooms decorated, but they don’t have to be decorated like the Town would. Add some props, change the flooring or coloring, but decorate more rooms than just the basic ones. You were capable of decorating 20+ rooms just a few years ago, why can’t you do that again?

If Club Penguin is always listening (as they say they always are) why haven’t they done anything? Parties have gone downhill since 2013 and I’m not the only one upset about this. Many penguins are. Yet the truth is, Club Penguin isn’t listening to this aspect which happens to be a HUGE deal. Parties are Club Penguin.

Club Penguin, please change.

When I joined in early August of 2015, I was so excited! I even activated my own account! The Fashion Festival was my least favorite because it lasted SO FREAKING LONG! There were TONS of parties after that. Some parties even made comebacks in 2016! Sayonara People! I have ALOT of Club Penguin to do!

Actually only 2 rooms of the July Event 2014 were decorated. The other 5 were party rooms and therefore do not count as the 48 rooms. So only 1/24 rooms were decorated in July. To put that into perspective of there were 96 rooms, only 4 would be decorated. That is how bad the situation is.

This is a great discussion so far, and I agree with everything you have said in it. Spike, I know you guys are really busy, but your parties used to be amazing, and they didn’t get boring after 5 minutes like the school one we have now, even when I was a member (My membership randomly disappeared). It was really boring. I would mind not having a party for 3 months if it meant an AMAZING party that would keep people entertained for more then 5 minutes. Who is the one saying you can only have 3 weeks? Those are the people who need to come read this discussion, not you guys who seem to not be able to change anything. I remember when I used to stay up light to be on for the starting of the parties, now I don’t care, because they are never as good as they used to be. I think the parties are the reason Club Penguin has been experiencing less traffic, and the sad thing is Toon Town CLOSED so Club Penguin can have the focus, and there has been no improvement.

So I have to go now, I will comment later.

Very good article, I enjoyed reading it, and it’s comments. I really understand what you mean about the room decorations. The rooms are decorated well, but parties seem to be more towards room decorations nowadays. Not really the fun of the party. Older parties like in 2009 and before, had simple room decorations, but had fun activities you can do during the party, even if the decorations weren’t amazing. 2012 seemed to be the final year where parties had that special work put into them, then BillyBob left, and Happy77 and Businesmoose, and Club Penguin really seemed to loose it’s fun a greatness. A few parties in 2013 were good, but CP really has gone downhill since then. Most parties in 2014 are just weird and boring, I remember the hollywood party, that party was kinda fun, but boring because It would take literally hours to take pictures, and collect all the items. Parties like the Frozen party had great decorations, but you can do everything the party offers in about 3 minutes. Collecting all the “hidden” snowflakes was very easy, even a young child can do it in about 5 minutes. Club Penguin has to make good room decorations but also has to have fun parties, not parties that just have a task that takes 3 minutes to do, or more tasks get unlocked everyday. Also CP has stopped making the free item crates, those were a free and easy way to get the items the party gives. I think they stopped having item crates around the beginning of 2012. Some CP players play, but aren’t very serious about the game, with item crates, they could have went on, collected the items, and left, but with the tasks, it usually takes over 20 minutes to do the task and collect the items. The tasks are also usually boring, many of the tasks are just pressing D or scare, or take pictures, or some other movement. Parties need to have things like Scavenger hunts, and short tasks for players to be happy. Even with the simple room designs before, parties were fun. Club Penguin would be nothing without it’s parties, and the parties are lacking so much for the past year. Operation Blackout was the last, amazing party, that was just perfect in so many ways, a lot of parties since that didn’t have what Operation Blackout did. Okay, this comment is done, thank you for reading. 🙂

Great discussion Riyita! I actually reviewed CP’s parties from this year and other years and sent an email to CP Support suggesting my views on what the parties for 2015 should be and what should be included. Most of my ideas used rooms from parties this year eg. Penguin cup and turning it into something greater! Like a School Party 2015 which uses rooms from the Penguin Cup (different teams and hangouts like from the M.U Takeover), the M.I takeover rooms (auditorium, school grounds etc.) and rooms from the upcoming School & Skate party. Another idea was using rooms from parties this year eg. Music Jam and expand the amount of decorated rooms for a future version of the party – kinda like what the Prehistoric Party did for the 2014 version expanding from the 2013 version.

I agree, the new parties are horrible. If you look at Festivel Of Flight, there was loads to do, you could go on a balloon ride which was very well designed. The party had a backstory, Gary needed to fix the Pool windows so he lifted the island up and we could help him!

Thanks for the feedback, Riyita. Don’t worry, the team is always listening and looking to improve things for the community. Just curious: what are your top 3 favorite parties of all time?

i dont think so if the team is always listening to the community of course i mean look at these new parties for example the music jam 2014, lack of professionalism.

I wanted to answer as well hehe. My favourite parties are : Halloween Party 2012, Medieval Party 2012, Operation : Blackout and the Teen Beach Movie Takeover party. As you can tell, I loved most of the parties in 2012 🙂

I second that Operation: Blackout is still the best party of all time. 🙂

Indeed. April Fools 2011 and Medieval Party 2012 focused mostly in party rooms, yet the entire island was decorated. For traditional parties like in the case of Music Jam 2014, you shouldn’t have focused entirely the party in a Music Cruise. Why not entirely in the island as well? You ruined a great reputation of a party…

(as of you, I mean the entire CP Team)

Congratulations Riyita. You are really good at making discussions.

I completely agree with you. Sometimes I’m really mad with parties. Look at the Medieval Party 2012, it had a lot of party rooms and quests, and also almost the whole island was decorated! Now look at Medieval Party 2013, they decorated 10 rooms and made a potion useless quest. This also happened with the Halloween Party. In 2009-2012 it had great party rooms (Such as the Lab, the Haunted Mansion, the Dark Swamp and Gariwald’s Mansion). In 2013, same thing for Medieval.

10 Rooms decorated (Not counting the rest of the island rooms since they weren’t Halloween related, only the sky changed)and an useless candy system, which could be replaced easily by another Scavenger Hunt. Spike Hike should read those discussions 100+ times. If he really said something at June, why did the July party have poor content? I really hope he reads my comment and makes the Halloween Party 2014 Awesome as 2006-2012!

(If there are any grammar errors, i’m really sorry, i’m not English)

Hey Riyita, thanks for the thoughtful post! We don’t mind thoughtful criticism like this and we are always listening to the audience. To give you a little context….

CP parties used to be very small. Costume changes and decorations in a few rooms. In 2009, we started working on a new tech platform which meant we couldn’t add new features to web CP for a while, so we decided to make the parties bigger and we put most of our resources there. The parties got to be really big – actually Star Wars was the biggest ever in number of rooms. But what we found is that with so many rooms, the audience got spread out and there wasn’t enough concentration to have a social experience.

On top of that, the production schedule for parties is really short. Its 3 weeks for most parties but for 2 parties a year we have 5 weeks. We just can’t make a huge party every time and deliver every month, so we’ve had to take our shots on the big ones.

Lately, we got very focused on these quest + mini game parties and while those add some good game play, it feels like we’ve been missing on the social and world aspects. So we are trying to address that. Every party is different. Sometimes we hit the mark and sometimes we don’t.

But we are always listening and trying to improve! So thanks for the feedback. And as always…

“Lately, we got very focused on these quest + mini game parties and while those add some good game play, it feels like we’ve been missing on the social and world aspects. So we are trying to address that. Every party is different. Sometimes we hit the mark and sometimes we don’t.”

To solve this problem, there needs to be no mini-games or quests unless they involve interaction with other players. But it can’t be boring interaction like the Shootouts mini-game had, it has to be interaction that we have control over. This makes the player make the decisions and thus makes the world a sandbox, the way it should be. In any case, this doesn’t have to be crafted in the way that you define a “mini-game” or a “quest”, it can be skillfully done in the context of the party, but this ultimately requires development to the party’s storyline. We have little that we can do to influence the plot, because we can’t really make a “mark” on the island that leaves a trail, so it’s really up to the team to craft a clever storyline for us to enjoy to be involved in.

The Mountain Expedition is one event that was a quest in itself. That’s much more interesting than having a quick and easy quest as a subset of a party (such as in the Frozen Party’s case). The Mountain Expedition led to social and world aspects by the Base Camp that brought people together (I was at this party and I know – it was neat being around the fire with others). Still, the Mountain Expedition was not ultimate. So what was missing? You could say the “mini-game”, but more importantly, the storyline.

Operation: Blackout definitely mixed the “mini-game” and “quest” aspect. There were mini-games with the Traffic Jam like thing (although that was a terribly weird way to break a security terminal) to complement the overall mission, and more importantly, there was a “quest” like structure from the mission briefing. Not only did this cause engagement with the task at hand, but it also encouraged players to interact with other field agents and players; and there was a lot of opportunity for this given the judicious amount of rooms to utilize, especially the Underground Resistance Base and the Lighthouse.

It’s very boring having parties which aren’t like Operation: Blackout because of the lack of character development and storyline behind it. Herbert and Klutzy are interesting characters for their involvement in Club Penguin. In the Penguin Cup, Frozen Party, Music Jam 2014, Muppets World Tour, and many other parties, you can’t have that level of interest to the characters to be engaged in social and world aspects, because the characters are barely involved.

To conclude, maybe all you need to focus on for a party in the storyline (especially with developed characters), and a captivating one. When you do, the elements of social and world aspects can naturally work itself into the party. We should get a satisfactory party all the time, every time. And if you do find you have a seriously tight production schedule, why not have a series of events that slowly unfold instead of different parties each month, with a little cliffhangers here and there?

I know Spike Hike is probably not going to read this, but I hope this helps anyway. 🙂

I agree. You said someone who’s been playing since 2011 can see the difference but I even see a difference and I’ve been playing since June 2012.I stated on Twitter the other day that everyone’s quitting and I believe Club Penguin will be better by 2015 and everyone will not be there to see it because they all quit.By the way basically 2 rooms at the Music Jam were decorated.

5 of them were a cruise ship and the Town was a recycle from the Teen Beach Movie Takeover so the Dock was basically the only newly decorated “room” because the cruise ship was like the center of the party and I actually enjoyed the cruise ship.It looked pretty cool in my opinion but they have done better I can say.

Yeah it was kinda boring that only 2 rooms were actually decorated on the island itself but if the Music Jam returned in 2015 it would be nice for more rooms to be decorated on the island – some being remakes of past music jam rooms eg. Back Stage, Battle of the Bands, but modernised – and then for the cruise ship to return as well!

What’s been said above, is true. The recent parties lacked a ton. Whether it be decorations, tasks, purpose, you name it. There’s surely a significant difference between 2012 and 2014. 2012 parties had a lot more activities/tasks, which is crucial for a better event. Since then, it’s been quite lame.

Especially the takeovers. The only decent ones were the ones in 2012, as they were absolutely better. But that’s just the takeovers. As for regular events, rooms were more prompt. I like how they continue to add/change rooms and people never seem to use them. I mean, they seem cool at first, but then get a bit repetitive. Overall, this was a well written post.
