Club Penguin has gone through some rough changes over the past few years… But one of the most dramatic changes occurred on November 18th, 2010. The fall of the Club Penguin Times… Club Penguin’s Newspaper gave the island a story. They would feature great and amusing articles. Each article would be two pages long, and have original pictures drawn specifically for that article. Some issues even had a few puzzles that you could actually play. (Puzzles were among the most popular section in the old newspapers).
Club Penguin Times:
Take this article from issue 118, where Aunt Arctic talks about Ice Hockey, something that had nothing to do with that month’s party. Back then, the Club Penguin Times talked about other things around the island. NOT just about that month’s party which in this case, is all the current newspaper really talks about.
I took some time and made this video which showcases some of the old puzzles. Club Penguin ditched puzzles along with some other sections in the redesign. There hasn’t been a puzzle since 2009.
As you can see, there are some fantastic and creative puzzles in those newspapers. Part of what made Club Penguin enjoyable for me was the Club Penguin Times. Every week, I looked forward to spending the 10 minutes reading, exploring, and completing the puzzles that were featured in the newspaper.
Besides from puzzles and fantastic articles, the “Ask Aunt Arctic” section was heavily focused on. REAL and INTERESTING questions were actually asked. Heck, even TWO questions were answered and the Ask AA section took up TWO pages!
However, today’s Ask AA section features some spectacular questions as well. For example, this week’s question was “Where do I adopt Puffles?” Last weeks question was even better! “How do I change my color?” Aren’t those some INCREDIBLE questions? One word for this. Laziness.
We ALL know that the old design beats out the new one in every single way possible. The new newspaper is boring, and doesn’t really even have a story to it. The Club Penguin Times back then had over 1.5 million weekly readers. I’m sure that number has gone down since the redesign.
Now let’s talk about Pins. Before I get started, I wrote an entire in-depth discussion about Pins in the past. If you would like to check that out, click here. I’m going to make this short. Pins aren’t a challenge, nor are they fun to track down anymore. Club Penguin makes them WAY to obvious. In the past, finding the new Pin every 2 weeks was a BLAST. It took me a good 5-10 minutes. I first had to find the room in which the Pin was hidden in. That alone took a few minutes because I actually had to scan the room I was in, and couldn’t spot the Pin within 3 seconds.
The Chat Filter:
Club Penguin’s chat filter is like highly trained EPF agents who drank too much coffee and are on alert, looking for any words that aren’t registered in the system. In 2011, Club Penguin changed their filter. Any word that wasn’t in their system got blocked. The filter is far from perfect and is very strict. Again, I made an entire discussion about the filter in the past, but I felt bring it up again in this discussion is appropriate. If you want to check out the full discussion about the filter, click here.
In my opinion, the filter is a HUGE setback as to why Club Penguin isn’t as fun anymore. Why is it a setback? YOU CANNOT TALK! I have tested many, many, sentences that should have had no problem going through. If you cannot communicate properly with your friends, the game will naturally become boring and not as fun. Lightin the filter up a little. Let words that are obviously not bad pass through.
Yeah, yeah. I know I’ve been talking bad about parties for awhile now. But the truth is, we haven’t seen a truly good party in awhile. Parties are what everyone looks forward to at the end of the month. Players love logging on and exploring all the decorated rooms, like the Coffee Shop!
They also love seeing how the juicy story unfolds, and completing tracking down the mascot. But wait a minute… It’s rare if a party has a storyline nowadays… The Coffee Shop isn’t decorated anymore… And what is this talk about actually having to track the mascot? These are key factors that make a party fun, and we haven’t seen any in quite some time. The team is focused on making entirely NEW rooms. And that’s fine! BUT! In my opinion, only the Town and the Plaza should be turned into entirely new rooms. If they do this, then the other “untouched” rooms can receive some love as well.
Even older parties felt like they had a story because the newspaper gave them one! The articles would describe the party in great detail and make YOU want to log on and see if for yourself. You just don’t see this much detail go into today’s newspaper anymore… Club Penguin said they redesigned the newspaper because it took too much time to make each week. Well, I don’t see any other areas improving… Do you?
Spike Hike tweeted this out last June in response to my discussion about how all Club Penguin parties feel the same.
That discussion was made 8 months ago, and we STILL haven’t seen any improvement. 🙁
Throughout 2005-2012, Club Penguin designed some pretty wacky clothing items. They were unique, and you wouldn’t see anyone wear them in real life. Starting in 2013, Club Penguin began ignoring the crazy items, and started focusing on creating clothing that we would wear in real life. Which in my opinion, was a very bad decision. As my friend V0rtex says in his letter where he discusses how Club Penguin can improve, Items, I only wear the old ones. Why? Because I like to be unique, nobody else has them, and it makes me stand out.. If I wanted to be a scuba diver in space, I could!
Furniture Items have also become an issue. Why? They are too BIG! It’s very hard to decorate an igloo when you have huge furniture items, and only so much space. The igloo on the left showcases some older items. There are 27 furniture items in that igloo. The igloo on the right features some newer items. There are 14 furniture items inside. See a problem? I could fit just about double the amount of furniture in the left igloo than the one on the right. If Club Penguin made furniture smaller, we could create more creative, and bigger igloos!
Another thing to bring up is the catalog covers. Starting in 2013, Club Penguin changed their catalog covers. In the past, each cover featured a colorful design that MADE you want to see what was inside. Nowadays, each cover is simply blue with a picture of the furniture items in a igloo, or clothing items on a penguin. They are extremely boring, and unwelcoming.
They also haven’t been implementing animations in hardly any of the newer furniture items lately. Some don’t even rotate… I made a video which showcases some older igloo items, and some newer ones. Notice how many more older items are animated…
How Club Penguin Can Improve:
Nevertheless, there are ways Club Penguin can indeed change, and make the overall experience more enjoyable.
- Decorate smart, not hard. I feel like the Town and the Plaza should be decked out while decorating a lot of the other rooms as well. The more rooms we have decorated, the better the experience. Also add difficult puzzles and quests to parties. What we have right now just doesn’t cut it.
- Improve the filter! Everyone agrees that it’s too strict. Ease up, or come up with another form of communicating.
- Let the art team have a little fun! I really do miss the old creative items that made me feel like I was one of a kind.
- Bring excitement back to the Club Penguin Times. I bet you could incorporate some puzzles. That was the most read section back in the day. I’m sure players would love to see them again. You could even offer up a rare award for completing the puzzle.
- Hide those Pins better. Nuff said.
I would highly encourage you to check out my friend V0rtex’s letter where he gives his suggestion as to how Club Penguin can fix itself. You can read it by clicking here.
I only want the best for Club Penguin. I don’t like to sit here and criticize the game all day, but everyone would agree, its going through some hard times and all I want is to see the game improve.
