Club Penguin Discussion 11/17: Should CP Ease Their Chat Filter?

cp filters

This week’s Club Penguin Discussion is all about CP’s chat filter. Club Penguin has spent a lot of time and resources trying to perfect their chat filters. But have they ruined the basic methods of communication on Club Penguin in the process?

Back in 2008, Club Penguin had filters, but they weren’t as close to what is in place today. Of course if you cursed or anything like that, you would get banned. But if you simply tried having a conversation, it would go through the filter no problem. Nowadays, you can’t even have a full conversation without having something being blocked by Club Penguin’s filters.

I tried having a conversation with my friend, Kallie Jo, and the simple sentence, “Did you watch the game last night?” didn’t show for him. Personally, I think that is ridiculous. I don’t see anything wrong with that sentence at all… Do you? :/

You can’t even have a simple conversation without running into filter problems. I know Club Penguin wants to keep it safe and all, but in my opinion, I think they are going over the top.

Part of what made Club Penguin fun was the social aspect. A lot of penguins prefer the “Old Club Penguin” for a few reasons, but communication was one of them.

Spike Hike also tweeted last year that private chat would be making it’s way onto the island by the end of 2013. Unfortunately, it did not.

private chat tweet

A few months after that tweet was sent, Spike Hike tweeted this out doubting private chatting.

I made up a list of words and sentences that should be able to go through the filter, but for some odd reason, don’t.

  • Do you think we can tip the Iceberg?
  • Do you think a lot of people still play CP?
  • My toque is pink.
  • I think camping is fun do you?
  • I love playing Nintendo games.
  • I opened the door and saw a yellow puffle.
  • My favorite puffle is the white one.
  • My favorite season is winter.
  • Do you like going out to eat?
  • How is your day going so far?

Isn’t it ridiculous how the statements above wouldn’t make it passed the filters? 😛

In all, if Club Penguin wants to improve communication between their users, they are going to have to ease up on their chat filters. I can’t have a simple, normal conversation with my friend without there being filter problems! I prefer outside uses of communication as the filters are quite bad…

What do YOU think? Should Club Penguin ease up on their chat filters? Or should they stricken in them even more?

Leave a comment below, and let me know. 🙂

For some reason since yesterday nothing I say has been getting past the filters. I can’t even say ‘hi’

i think they need to ease up i agree that cussing and bad words should be blocked but things like hows your day going is just friendly talk thats really silly they need to tone it down a notch or players will only able to talk on other sites like twitter and fan pages 🙂

Completely agree. They focus too much on making the app work instead of ensuring that the game as a whole works. Even then, the app is too unsafe! They forgot the filters and others can use it to hack your account and leave it untraceable. Then they have the guts to say we make the game unsafe? PFFT! Charity starts at home as they say…

Yes because “Puffle Wild” doesn’t pass the filter, smh.

I think what they should do is make a private chat where you can pretty much private chat with a friend, and they can see anything except a gross comment or swear words. Sometimes people want to chat to their friend only and it’ll be hard because there would pretty much be a penguin in every room, and they want to chat. Their friend may not be even in the same server! They should add ‘Private Chat’s at least where the chat filter is at least better. I think that would make the game better 🙂

I agree that the safety chat is a bit much. I agree with the idea of being safe and I think everyone should be safe and smart online but when I type clean, positive words, I think they should show up for my buddies to read and see. I write CP all the time with ideas and suggestions and I suggested that the Chat History (blue arrow at the top of the screen) should ONLY show chat history of what actually shows up for everyone to see so that way we KNOW if our typing shows up. I can see how it is tricky because in the past I have seen some creepy people saying some creepy things that were VERY inappropriate! But yes, sometimes our clean words don’t show and some mean or negative words show but I am sure that if we report these people to CP and they read our reporting, that they would remove these mean words or ways creepy people get around to type it. Me and my buddies say all the time: Safety chat…too safe? I would rather stay on CP then chat on other sites and a lot of people are using other sites to chat with buddies. I hope CP finds a way to keep my buddies and others on CP and make us all mostly happy. There is always bad with good…it just sucks sometimes when bad people ruin things for the rest of us good people!!! Waddle on! 🙂

Great post as always, Riyita. An extremely interesting topic too.

TO be honest as much I love puffles. CP should focus more on problems than puffles. I rather be able to talk to friends on cp no problem no having to say in a hundred different ways…

Great point, and great suggestion, I believe we should have some sort of private chat. True that CP was meant to socialize

I agree. Club Penguin should have just left the filter the way it was way back then instead of making “improvements” (unless they are actually improvements). We shouldn’t forgot the SoundStudio filter either. It’s even worse then the chat filter.

I agree 100% that CP should really loosen up the chat filters a little. Me and my sister were chatting on CP a few days ago, and some pretty innocent things didn’t show, such as “Puffle Wild”, “name”, and “up”, which is pretty stupid TBH.

They should really really make that chat filter better! I hate when I say something about pookies like annoying and they don’t even see them >:(

I prefer communicating with CP Friends via other resources and I agree. I recall doing a test where I registered a new penguin, then I saw an old friend called Ricky130 back in Summer 2013, I said hello to him but he didn’t answer. I thought it had something to do with the chat filters so I logged onto my main account (Phineas99) via another browser and guess what? I was right. It didn’t show anything. I even have proof:

CP gets getting ridiculous with their filters. Worst of all, THOSE whom actually attempt to say inapp things or swear get through the filters! How is saying “hello” to somebody inapp? Crazy but real!
